Israel’s Passover Seders Interrupted by Multiple Missile Attacks from Iran and Hezbollah
The nation of Israel was warned of potential increased attacks by Iran and Hezbollah during the Passover week, and especially on Wednesday night during the traditional Passover Seder meal. The military and defense systems were on high alert, said Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin.
In recent days, Iran’s launching of missiles had slowed to ten to fifteen missiles a day. On the first day of war, there were ninety ballistic missiles sent. Recently, launches have come in smaller numbers, often between one and three missiles in each barrage.
Sirens sounded repeatedly throughout the country at the start of Passover, sending millions to their bomb shelters. Iran sent multiple barrages toward Jerusalem, central Israel, and northern Israel. Soon enough, Hezbollah sent rockets toward Haifa and Israel’s northern-most communities. A few of the missiles carried cluster munitions which spread deadly smaller bombs across central Israel with reports of impacts, damage, and injuries in Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, Petah Tikvah, and Bnei Barak.
Due to the significant reduction of people allowed to gather in public places, the Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City was not allowed to hold the Passover priestly blessings. Normally, tens of thousands of worshippers descending from the priestly line gather to pray before Passover. This year, just fifty selected people gathered, and the event was broadcasted live.
The Western Wall Plaza, the Al Aqsa Mosque, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre all had major religious events reduced for fear of rocket alerts and inadequate space for hundreds, if not thousands, of worshippers to seek proper shelter. Multiple sites in and around the Old City have had significant shrapnel falls and damage.
Please pray for safety during the final days of the Passover holiday for the nation of Israel and Jewish people globally.
Israel Aerospace Industries Greenlighted for Heightened Defense Production
Israel has approved the rapid increase in production of Arrow 2 and 3 interceptors that act against the ballistic missiles sent by Iran and the Yemen Houthis. The Iron Dome has been used to intercept ballistic missiles, but their purpose is to intercept smaller missiles, usually sent from Hamas or Hezbollah. Concerns have been growing that stockpiles of Arrow 2 and 3 interceptors are running low. More than expected—over 550—were used during the June war with Iran. Now, as stocks need to be replenished, Israeli predictions also did not believe this war with Iran would last as long as it has. Therefore, the manufacturer of Arrow 2 and 3 interceptors, Israel Aerospace Industries, has started to increase its production.
Please pray for the increased defensive protection of Israel as it aims to bolster production of Arrow 2 and 3 ballistic interceptors.
Israel’s Natural Gas Platforms Off the Coast
Israel has three natural gas platforms off the coast of Haifa: Karish, Tamar, and Leviathan. Chevron and Energean operate these platforms, provide gas to Israel, and export gas to Egypt and Jordan. On February 28, at the start of Operation Roaring Lion, Israel shut down Leviathan and Karish as a security precaution because defending the platforms against missile attacks is difficult. The Tamar platform remained open.
After a month, the Energy Ministry is now opening the Leviathan gas platform in order to resume exporting operations to Egypt and Jordan. The defense authorities’ decision to re-open the Leviathan platform was difficult and now will need to defend it. With Karish the only major national infrastructure asset still closed since the start of the war, it is costing up to ten million dollars a month in standby expenses. Karish supplies half of Israel’s domestic gas consumption, so it appears counter intuitive to the economic needs of Israel for it to remain closed. Since Karish is critical to Israel’s energy system, Energean is hopeful that the Energy Ministry will allow the safe return of its gas production.
Please pray for the aerial defense and safety of the three major natural gas platforms off the coast of Haifa. Please pray that their gas production will safely resume soon.
Passover with our Staff in Israel
Thank the Lord, our staff in Israel report that they have remained safe and had enjoyable Seders, despite repeated air sirens and the need to seek shelter. Many invited guests to join their holiday table, and all the guests arrived safely. However, some arrived a little late since they either waited for sirens to stop before leaving their homes or were caught outside and had to pull over, exit their vehicles, and seek shelter—which sometimes meant just lying on the ground and covering their heads. Our staff are thrilled by the special guests who joined; many were not yet believers. One Seder even had fifteen new immigrants, who experienced their first Passover in Israel! The experience of hearing the Passover explained by a believer—centered around how the elements of the Seder point toward Jesus—resulted in many questions, discussions, and genuine surprise.
Recently, we have been trying to help children have fun and recover from the stress and trauma of these past weeks of war. Even having just one day of fun is enough! So, our staff in Jerusalem is planning gatherings in or near bomb shelters that allow for games, joy, and maybe even a little bowling!
Please pray for changed hearts especially after learning about the perfect, shed blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God, who died so that we may live! Praise God for the Seders held in many of our staff’s homes in Haifa, Jerusalem, Ashkelon, Petach Tikvah, and Ramat Gan. Please pray for the dear children at our gatherings to be encouraged and renewed, and that they will get to enjoy a day of laughter.
